Garage Doors
I took the day off to work on the house…and also to dream about things that we can’t afford. I’m currently thinking about our garage door. It’s an odd door, I’m not sure how it came to be. The backside of the door looks original, while the front side of the garage has that faux wood grain that many new garage doors have. Here is a picture of our garage right now (reminder: we are painting the house):

I started thinking about the garage door when I noticed a cute house down the street had a garage door with windows. I decided it really helped the house look open and inviting.
Here is a garage door I found that I want now.

I’ll keep dreaming.

That would be cool…oh well maybe you can find a slightly cheaper one. Our garage door needs replacing too (one more thing in a LONG list!). Good tip on “lottalivin”. I’m in progress of setting up a webring for midcentury remodeling..want to join when I have it set up?
I’m going to post some of the photos from the landscape book today.

Is painting yr current door an option? It is odd, but a little funky too

Hi Christian, I see what you’re saying. I tried to pretend I was seeing the garage door for the first time when I read your note. I’m somewhat skewed about the door ‘cause the previous owners painted everything on our house with one coat of paint, so when you look at the door, not in a photo, it’s also a crappy paint job. We will be painting the door, since that’s all we can afford.
However, I like the door in the photo better because it’s more suited to our “prairie style” ranch. Ours is more 40’s than it’s mid-century modern. I think the garage door might be more appropriate to a mid-century modern ranch. Also, the most difficult thing has been trying to figure out what colors to paint the house when two colors have already been decided 1) the red roof and brick and 2) The mahogany on the west side of the front of the house. I talked with a graphic designer and some other folks, and with the natural wood and red brick they thought the lighter greens made our house look country, which I had to agree when I thought of it that way. So, we’re trying a dark grey/brown with undertones of green and then a trim that is kinda greyish/green. It’s hard to describe. Luckily it’s not that big of a patch to paint since it’s only the east side of the house! If we don’t like it, we can change it…though I’d rather not. I’m rambling now.

Well, we just got pricing on the door. $3,500 starting price! I’ll continue my search, that is much too much for a garage door for us! That could buy an entire living room of furniture plus art.

You know……With the center line on the door, it could be made to look like older style doors that split in the center and swing open to the sides. Long tapered iron hinges painted top and bottom on each side, a one inch slightly darker strip down the middle(simulating over lapping doors and a pair of strap iron handles in the middle. When the door is closed it would almost have an upscale carriage door effect! The raised panels are a little outta contrast but the right colors could play them down quite a bit. Might even pay to shade the border around the outside of the door and down the middle, making it look like two individual swinging panels!
