I did it!

I finished painting the final coat of blue in the kitchen. Hooray! Tomorrow I’m painting the baseboard or working on the scribe molding, I haven’t decided yet.
Tomorrow I’ll have to take some pictures because Eric started the front yard deconstruction today. He’s insane! I can’t believe how much he did in one day. Our yard is a big pile of dirt and mud now. He came in a few times to complain about what a crappy job the previous owners had done on the yard. Over the past 50 years there was definitely a random assortment of materials used in the front yard. Nothing matches anything else…gravel, bricks, river rock, grey stepping stones, red stepping stones, round stepping stones, square stepping stones, old cement used as stepping stones, rotting logs as trim around the bushes and trees, the list is endless!

What type of house do you live in?

I thought it would be interesting to see what type of house my blog readers live in! So, I created this poll using dpolls.com. It’ll be open for a week. The poll only allows 7 options, so if your house isn’t listed, please add it to the comments section. Thanks for participating!

Buckle Down

You heard it here first. I’m seriously going to buckle down and work toward finally finishing up the kitchen. I’ve promisesd myself that I would put on the last and final coat of wall paint in the kitchen this weekend. This will require taping off all the cabinets, protecting my new curtains, and purchasing a new paint roller, and getting down to work. Is it normal to lose all enthusiasm when you only have 3% of a project left to finish? We still need to add scribe modling, paint walls, paint baseboards, paint double-hung window, and add end panel to the pantry cabinet. I don’t feel like doing it - but I will overcome my lackadaisical attitude!

In other news I’ve been pondering switching my blog over to a paid service with more options. Sometimes I get frustrated with the limitations of blogsome. But, lately, I’ve taken a keen interest in all the folks who are finding my website when they do a search for 1950’s bathrooms . There really is nothing out there about 1950’s bathrooms, and it would appear a lot of other people, like me, are looking for information. If I used another service I would have an easier time of creating a subdirectory devoted entirely to 1950’s bathrooms.

1940’s and 1950’s Decorating Books

Today I figured something out. If I type “1951 decorating book” in ebay and then select “search title and description” I can bid on some great books! I tried numerous years, 1949, 1950, 1951, and 1952. I purchased a 1951 book and have a bid on a 1949 book. I’m extremely excited to see the books. Again, I have no desire to have a 1951 replica house, but a flavor for the time period would be great. Right now I’m most interested in seeing bathroom and bedroom pictures. Although, quite frankly I have the feeling our bedroom will ultimately not look like a 1950’s bedroom, since I have yet to find a picture or example of a 1950’s bedroom that I like.

After looking at my stats today I noticed a lot of folks were finding the site through msn. Since I’ve never used msn I decided to give it a try, and while replicating a search I stumbled upon another ranchblogger that is not listed on houseblogs. I invited them to join, but in the meantime take a look at The 2nd-Chance Ranch

I’ve been feeling some anxiety as the weather warms up about one of my upcoming projects–stripping and painting the windows. As usual, I’ll be purchasing a book to help fend off my worries and guide me through the process. I read a great review of “Working Windows” a couple weeks ago and so I plan on purchasing it online this evening.

Sick and twisted

I can’t sleep so I’m up feeding my sick and twisted obsession with home interior by surfing the net. Which does remind me of a story. On Friday my boss, myself, and two of my coworkers went out to lunch. I asked everyone we were with, “Name the one personality trait you love most about your partner.” I thought to myself that I love the fact that Eric is never boring. Then I thought perhaps that wasn’t exactly a trait, so I said, “I love that Eric is always entertaining.” To which my boss made a sound that was kind of a cross between a chuckle and a guffaw. I said, “What?” To which he said, “Laurie, that isn’t saying much. All you’d need is a room, some paint, and the internet and you’d be entertained for the rest of your life.” Then he pretended he was me and said, “I wonder what type of finish this is on my wall, I’ll have to go online and find out.”

The real reason of my post…when I was a kid we lived in Spain until I was 4. I have only a few memories, one of which is flamenco dancers. Also, my dad hung a piece of art in the house (although my mom questions if it was art) that showed a bullfighter in the ring. Which brings me to this great piece of reproduction fabric. I’m thinking I really need to get my mom to make a pillow for me out of this fabric:

The only thing holding me back is the fabric is rather loud and tacky, but at the same time that’s what I like about it. Conundrum.
