Hey, I'm trying to learn how to do cobblestoning. I saw a great feature the other day where a person cobblestoned their bathroom floor!! It was beautiful. Do you know how to cobblestone? What materials, how to?? etc.

Thanks,

Hi Jennifer! Well, actually the floor is just vinyl tiles, (peel and stick) from home depot. Very easy to install on top of the old linoleum, all the directions are on the package, including buying a leveler compound, etc. I did it in one day. About the toilet...well, it's just a regular toilet by Kohl. In fact, they have one right down the street at our little mom-and-pop shop. HOWEVER, what you need to buy seperately is the black toilet seat. I got that at a large hardware store in Eugene Oregon, but you should be able to get one just about anywhere. :) The seat makes all the difference in the "look".

I love the floor AND the toilet. What kind of floor is this - manufacturer/material? And if you don't mind my asking, where'd you get the terrific toilet? I'm getting ready to renovate my 50's kitchen & bathroom and this is just what I'm looking for.

Super helpful-- thanks! I was looking at GoDaddy a little while back, but server space was the detail I hadn't figured out. Transferring the posts manually sounds like a major pain so thanks for the warning and good advice.

Yeah, I can sympathize about the switch over. We moved House in Progress early on from Blogger.com to our own domain (powered by Movable Type). Even with relatively few posts back then it wasn't easy.

Good luck...and enjoy your time in Chicago! :-)

Josh, right now I'm frustrated, but thanks to Merideth over at House-Made I'm hanging in! First I bought the domain from GoDaddy, then I bought some space over at Made2Own, I just downloaded all the photos. I can't use the same template, it's just too difficult to switch over, so I picked a new one and am now tweaking it ever so slowly. Next I'm going to move the posts. I can't seem to figure out an easy way to do that, so one by one right now, which kinda makes me want to scream.

Sadly, with all the money we're pouring into the landscaping right now, we had to wait on the outside lights. I think those will come in a few months. Today we had 6 yards of gravel dropped off for all the paths in the yard. On the first of the month we'll have the funding to actually buy the pavers! In the meantime, I think we're going to buy 3 yards of rock, and Trevor, our friend, will begin building the rock wall in front of the yard.
I just began Reading Lolita today. It's really good so far. I got sidetracked reading Bookseller of Kabul, which I highly recommend. I'm taking a class right now and focusing my readings on the middle-east.

Wow! the house looks great! I like the window and I totally understand the painful yardwork. I'm about to post some more pictures!
So, are you liking "Reading Lolita from Tehran"? Our bookgroup read it and loved it, but it took a while to get through!
Oh, and where's your post on the outdoor lights? Did any of them have motion sensors on them? we have this weird wiring and some of our outdoor lights don't actually have switches on them (don't you love old houses!).

My hair was having a good day. Sometimes, well, most times, it's very droopy. :) I'm soooo happy with the window. All that is left in the kitchen: 1) scribe molding 2) threshold to TV room 3) long screws for one plug in 4) smooth ceiling around range hood; and 5)replace drawer face that Eric accidentally drilled a hole in. Really, it's hardly anything, but I'll still be happy if it's done by August, we've moved on to other projects and it's so hard to go back!!

A few years ago, I decided to revive a vegetable garden in the backyard of a house I was renting. The landlady said that a previous owner had an award-winning plot back there and the soil was ripe and just needed a good tilling! She had allowed grass to grow over the area, so I rented a tiller and we went down 6 whole inches to try to uproot the grass and weeds.

Needless to say, the earth was gorgeous and healthy, and within about a week the grass and weeds started to take over again. I spent about 5% of my time planting and about 95% of my time weeding. In the end, I used maybe 1/8 of the lot because I just couldn't keep up. It was exhausting!

In Texas, everything is bigger and stronger, including the bugs, the wildlife, and THE WEEDS! Gak!

Oh, and as an aside, Reading Lolita is as good as everyone says :)

Humorously I'm not reading Reading Lolita...because I went to the bookstore to get it and ended up reading "Bookseller of Kabul" which I strongly recommend. However, next on my list is "Reading Lolita..." I'll have to see if the library has a recorded version...

Pooor Erique!! Although I have to admit that when I read the word "bobcat" it made me think of the feline variety and I didn't understand how that would help with the weeds! (yes, I'm a little bit dense when it comes to large machinery). Can't ya just get some sort of weed-be-gone and call it good?

BTW, I read "Reading Lolita in Tehran" and then I checked out the audio version from the library and listened to it in my car and I have to say that I really enjoyed listening to it!

Christiane: The first few years here were a bit hard for me, I kept longing for the city. But, now I really love it--it's idyllic in many ways. Only a few things I'd change...more racial/ethnic diversity and more cultural activities (which would maybe require a performing arts center).

Sounds like Austin--terribly expensive but we wouldn't leave it for anything.

I had never heard of Corvallis before reading your blog. It sounds idyllic! Cute houses, good people. A few years ago, I might have thought of moving there ;-)

What a fabulous site! I love the design of the site itself, so cute and original. And the toys are all pretty darn cool, too.

Of course, the stove in the pic is terribly covetous.

You know......With the center line on the door, it could be made to look like older style doors that split in the center and swing open to the sides. Long tapered iron hinges painted top and bottom on each side, a one inch slightly darker strip down the middle(simulating over lapping doors and a pair of strap iron handles in the middle. When the door is closed it would almost have an upscale carriage door effect! The raised panels are a little outta contrast but the right colors could play them down quite a bit. Might even pay to shade the border around the outside of the door and down the middle, making it look like two individual swinging panels!

Hi Pj,

The tiling we did in ourbathroom is just vinyl tile, and if you want to do that it's the easiest thing in the world!! I put it right over the old tile. I just went to home depot and picked up the supplies according to the directions. I had to clean the old vinyl really well and then put on a leveler that was suggested, which really also helped to rough up the surface for adhesion.
Also, get an exacto knife that looks like a pen. It's soooo much easier to work with than those big bulky ones.

I was interested to read your experiences regarding re-tileing (sp?) your bathroom. I am assuming you, like me, are a female w/little home fix-it experience. My husband is going out of town next week (although he's not going rock climbing; chances are it would be me leaving to go climbing for a few days!) & I would like to tile our two small bathrooms as a surprise. Could it really be as simple as going down to Home Depot & getting the supplies you mentioned. My husband would fall over if he came home to new tiles in the bathrooms. The vinyl tile we have now is not attractive--it's starting to get an unattractive yellow haze. Do I have to pull the old tile, or do they make a tile that the unexperienced can sally forth & lay properly while leaving the old stuff down?

It reminds me of this tune, that was song on The Wicker Man movie:

Maypole - The Schoolboys

In the woods there grew a tree
And a fine, fine tree was he!

And on that tree, there was a limb
And on that limb, there was a branch
And on that branch, there was a nest
And in that nest, there was an egg
And in that egg, there was a bird
And from that bird, a feather came
And on that feather was
A bed.

And on that bed, there was a girl
And on that girl, there was a man
And from that man, there was a seed
And from that seed, there was a boy
And from that boy, there was a man
And for that man, there was a grave
And on that grave there grew
A tree.

A tree.

I feel like I should note that this is not a good poem. Just a scribble. I don't want anyone to think I think it's a masterpiece!

I haven't given birth, I haven't died, but I have changed jobs. The pain of changing jobs is relatively short-lived...however, remodeling this house is going to go on for years! Christiane, I agree...I think that renovating the house has really brought us closer. Granted, there are heated debates in front of the house. And sometimes I get very angry that Eric won't just agree on the paint colors and sometimes he gets angry that I feel like taking a nap rather than working on the house, but at the end of the day, we both go to sleep so much happier. We're like proud parents and this house has a mind of its own!

People kept telling us, don't do it, it will wreck yr marriage! I prefer to think that it just helps us get closer. After all, something about redoing a house is the epitome of compromise.

I hear that the stress of building/fixing up a new home is right up near birth, death, and changing jobs. How ironic that the sidebar ad came up for "walk-thru screens"!

Oh, I think I need to change the colors of the links, they must not be as dark on your computer as mine. Some of the links I included have buttons. I'll consider painting your office, but I'm pooped!

What am I missing? Where are the pics of the headboards? The 50s headboards I remember were upholstered with buttons, but the upholstery was usually vinyl so I'm sure you will want to try to find the look, but in a non-vinyl fabric. P.S. If you want to paint something less challenging than your windows, I will pay you to paint my little office room.

You sound like me. I have a really hard time saying no to new freelance projects. Finishing up my master's thesis while working on a freelance gig and baking my third baby AND building our new house (oh, and trying to do various kid-related things like start a chess club at my son's school and stay home part time with the wee one...) -- just call me Jane of All Trades, right?

Wait, did you say you need someone to paint yr house? I'll be right over! ;-)

The website (LeFroy Brooks) apparently does--or will--carry it. The page I got to said their "1950s Bel Air" line was "Coming Soon." Perhaps the product is available if you call, but the site doesn't yet show them. They are cool though.

Hello,

We too are looking for atomic age colors for our Ranch house near Berkeley, CA.

The Sherwin-Williams "Suburban Modern" collection matches, for the most part, what we found when we browsed through mid-50's editions of Better Homes and Gardens. Two of these colors are eerily similar to the cans of paint we just bought a few days ago.

You can view the colors in their cool flash visualizer, which lets you "paint" rooms in the target colors:

http://www.sherwin-williams.com/do_it_yourself/

To see the Suburban Modern colors, expand the left hand tab, select "Historic Collection", then use the drop-down menu above the colors to select "Suburban Modern".

Be careful, though. Our first pass at these colors resulted in 3 cans of paint being returned after we tried them on the three bedroom walls-- they were authentic Coral, Seafoam (turquoise), and a bright green (which is curiously absent from the S-W palette, but you'll find tons of green in the 1950's BH&G photos). Yellow is missing because we reserved that for the kitchen. After we painted a few square feet to test, we realized there's absolutely NO way we could bear to live in rooms that bright!

It's the same thing with the yellow we chose for the kitchen. We had to turn it down about 4 notches on the color chart to make it bearable. Now we have colors "inspired" by the 1950's.

If anyone actually has their house painted in *authentic* interior 1950's colors, my hat is off to them. ;)

This posting has had an abnormally large armount of views today, which tells me that others are also interested in finding an answer, but since nobody has posted, I'm guessing nobody has anymore information than I do.

I did do some more searching, and found a question answer section on the True Value website that had the following:
 1950s Theme in Rooms

Question:
I am trying to do my living room and kitchen area based on a 1950's theme. My couch is red my chairs are black, my kitchen table is black Formica top with chrome and black chairs. I have not yet decided on counter tops or cabinets. Can you give me some ideas?
Answer:
For a 1950's theme the only color missing is turquoise. Usually you see the white high gloss cabinets in the kitchens of these homes. You can go to an antique store and look for 1950 Post and Life magazines to get a flavor of color and cabinets. I also suggest going to your True Value store and looking for the Color Made Simple display. Look for stripe 5T-15, it has Belladonna 3531, Rosemary Bloom 3532 and Ashened Blue 3533, all in the blue turquoise family that is reminiscent of the '50's. Since you have red, I would avoid the 1950 pink unless your red is a classic. Then the two would meld. And for the living room see Idea Cards (on the same display) A7, A14, A16 and A17. All three incorporate a red of some shade and hue. The other two colors on each card are complimentary to the reds and can be incorporated together or separately. Mix and match until you find the right combination for the balance of the room. This should be a fun process, so take your time.

A poem maybe? Or haiku? Like:

Our car, my rake, an old Schwinn
Some skis, a green tent, a swim fin
We're really quite poor
And we need a new door
To keep the few things we have closed in!

That's 34 words!

Actually, this is the page that shows all the different houses in Palo Alto. It may not be the final answer, but it might help. (I went to high school in Palo Alto and used to ride my bike around these streets... - who knew that would come in handy! ) P.S. I finally got some shots of my scary suburban tract home that needs window help --- I think they'll be posted in the next day or so. Let me know if those link help the person who was on the search for Palo Alto architects. I have serious ranch envy!

I have no idea if this might lead whoever was trying to learn more about the Palo Alto architecture, but I think this site might be place to start. It links to the Eichler Network ... and the contact for this seems to know his Palo Alto history for architecture. Hope this helps.

Trissa - Thanks! I love their fabrics. In fact, I know I'll be buyinig from them again.
Aunt M, maybe mom can send you some swatches of leftover material, which would be better than a web image...or copy.

It's official. I give up. I've searched high and low, I've even searched the University of Washington Library databases. Although in the last year there have been quite a few articles written about the rising popularity of ranches, apparently they're not quite popular enough to write about the styles and details...most articles take the slant, "Surprise, surprise...the ranch is popular..." or something along those lines. I give it two years and the market will be swamped with books on ranches. At least I hope!

Modernism was quite big in Phoenix, where I grew up. Al Beadle and Ralph Haver were hugely influential in post war phoenix (the defining boom era for the 6th largest city). This site has a good reference.

As I'm drinking my coffee, I'm finding a few links: Levittown is now a historic district. Pierre Koenig, who's nice, but this is ultra, ultra modern. There's a neighborhood near me that's been designated a historic district of the International style, but I don't think there was just one architect.
Maybe another overlooked area is the celebration of basic home architects during this period. I'd love to hear what else you find out!

I'm glad you found my blog! It's great to have readers who love their ranches as much as we do! I have seen some pictures of California ranches with red tile roofs...I think that's what the "Rancho" look is all about. Although I'm quite possibly making that up in my mind and it might not be based on anything, so don't quote me on that. If you're living around palm trees and in California, sounds appropriate to me. The first ranches were based off of the ranches in Latin countries, so it seems like that would be a fitting roof. I've posted your question to the blog, we'll see what folks say. It appears the ranch is growing in popularity, so I have the feeling all this information is just about to surface. :) At least I hope so!!

We purchased a 1956 ranch house in Northern California in Nov.05. WE LOVE IT!! We were in a 1922 Victorian before and were very, "closed-in" and un-happy. The previous owners of the Victorian had done a very shabby job of replacing classic redwood windows with new vinyl windows, and so many other horrifying things. Our current 1956 ranch house is a classic, nearly untouched jewel. We even have the original BLUE-prints. It is so classic. I love your flooring in the kitchen, we are going to use the Marmoleum also, and we have a table that is very similar, just in red. I love the link to the Cliff May Homes in Long Beach, they remind me of our house. We have the endless sprawl of sliding doors, glass that leads to the courtyard, pool and lava-rock firepit. The pool is late 50's with the slide and diving board(railing and all).
We have the original shake roof, can you imagine, 50 years old! I would love to replace it with a red tile roof. Because our entire house is made of Redwood and has the heavy black iron fixtures, I think it would look great. My husband is not so sure. Any thoughts? Also, has anyone heard of the Palo Alto architect Marcus Steadman. He designed our home and apparently many other, Eichler-type homes in the Bay Area.
I love your Blog and your links. I wish I had your organization and creativity skills. Great Job! Sorry for any spelling errors, no spell check;(

The pool is late 50’s with the slide and diving board(railing and all).

Wow! What a difference some paint makes!

You might need to put something under the knocker to protect the door paint... Unless it comes with something built-in.

This may help to get a better view.

http://www.cbnsystem.com/software/selector_download.aspx

I downloaded this free software in order to scope out fresh colors for the trim on my house. (I posted a sample if you're interested in viewing it... http://serendipityhouse.bravejournal.com/entry/16092 ) My shutters are actually black right now and my front door is white.

Works great and the colors will come out transparent so you can still view the detail in your architecture. Hope it helps!

P.S. Love the red!!

It's definitely spring! Hooray! Yesterday was absolutely gorgeous out. After making the photo collage I told Eric that this was the beginning of the Eric Fanclub. Haha. You'll notice the emblem on Eric's shirt. Eric was in a rock climbing competition and they gave everyone these shirts with an emblem of Bruce Willis. What in the world Bruce Willis has to do with rock climbing I'm still trying to figure out...

Is that GREEN GRASS I see in the photos, flowers in bloom??!!
They keep teasing us here with half a day of semi-warmish weather, then rain for 2-1/2 days straight, and now it's too cold to spend any time outdoors. At least the lake isn't frozen anymore...
I am SO wanting to get some outside work done!
Love the photo collage by the way!!

Hey Jocelyn,

Funny thing is, our neighbor came over...retired gentlemen. And he was chatting with Eric and at the end of the conversation said, "Can I try the jackhammer?" Haha. So, He tried out the jackhammer. I really didn't have a desire 'cause my head was spinning from the sound. It took 6 hours...because Eric had never used one before, he didnt' know the first one was a dud. So, it took 3 hours to do half the path and then it died. He took it back and finished the other half in an hour.

How funny I voted for the 3rd light...the second light seems really bland and contemporary for the outside of your house...maybe better for a flat roof 50's style house...know what I mean?

Well, we just got pricing on the door. $3,500 starting price! I'll continue my search, that is much too much for a garage door for us! That could buy an entire living room of furniture plus art.

I like #2. Classic, yet a little funky. Plus, you want something easy to clean since they will be outside and might collect pollen, dust, etc over time.

It might be easier if you place a picture of the garage up also. I had to switch back and forth from your exterior pictures. Though I like the first one best with the post, I think number two would look better on the garage door, but I'm not really sure. If you have Photoshop, you could resize, cut, and paste the images on top of each other . And even if you don't have Photoshop you can download the free 30-day version from thier site. So....I say no. 2.

Yes! Marmoleum click planks. Wonderful. We went with planks because they were slightly less expensive...when we just had the floor and nothing else I did have a littl freak out thinking they were too bold in the yellow color. For some reason when it was just two planks together the yellow seemed more subdued, but when it was the entire floor the yellow was quite striking, and that's when I made the final selection on the modwalls blend (the stripe in the subway tiles). I made the choice because I thought I needed to bring the yellow up for the eye for the floor to make "sense" in all its dark yellowness. Now I love it. It all worked out for the best. Something about the kitchen reminds me of new orleans, which I like. Maybe it's the colors? I dunno. I really like the colors in the french quarter...

Ever since I read this article, I've been trying to figure out what our house is. We've been calling it the "Crackerbox" style, for lack of a better term. Most of the homes in our neighborhood were 2br/1ba, ~900sf, square, low-pitch roof, wood siding, wood floors. Nuthin fancy. Your basic box of a house. "Rambler" sounds more like the split-ranch home I lived in as a child in Illinois. I wonder if there is some kind of house glossary somewhere?

Thanks Amy. I'm sorry, I wish I could remember. I tried to remember before I did it, because I was explaining it to my husband pre-installation and he was not liking the idea. He likes it now though. I knew if I had the picture he'd like it. I'll tell you what I did, and perhaps that will help?

First, I have a double hung window, so I decided to get plantation shutters that would cover up the middle bar. So, all in all, they probably cover 60% of the height of the window. I bought the shutters from coastal shutters - so DON'T go there, it took forever and they never answered my phone calls or email. I got the biggest slats I could...I think 3" each, which is why there are only 4 on each side. After my dad hung the shutters (and I'm so happy he did, because it required a lot of patience, something I don't have and my husband doesn't like detail work). I went to home depot and looked at their premium wood selection. I got a 3 foot wide and 6 inches deep piece of wood. I wanted the premium wood 'cause my assumption was that it was stronger, 'cause I wanted to make sure it wouldn't bow in the middle. While I was at home depot I also went to the chain department and bought a thin chain, but made sure to see that it could carry a heavier load. I didn't want them pulling apart and then having a sink full of ceramic bits, plants, and dirt! I think I bought 10 feet or something. I also bought the hooks you see on the ceiling, I got white ones, and each one holds 40 pounds or something insane like that. I made sure to get hooks that could be turned 360, 'cause I wasn't sure if it would create problems with the chain if the hooks were stationary.
Then, I got everything home and spent the next day painting the shelf white with a sponge brush in semi-gloss. I did two coats on either side. Then I was getting ready to hang it, and realized the chain was too strong for me to bend. So, that's when I decided I'd need some S-hooks. So, I went to the local hardware store and bought 4 silver S-hooks. I then put the entire thing together by laying the board across the two chains, and making a triangle with each end to loop around the board. I secured the end of the loops to the main chain with the S-hooks. I also made sure to count the chain links so that each triangle was the same size. I then went to the kitchen, and began hanging it at different heights, with the goal of getting it level and about 1-inch above the shutter. I hung the chain by the hooks from the S-hooks. Finally I figured out the right height and got a wire cutter and snipped them and voila, done. I should add I'm not sure what the cutter was, I assume it was a wire cutter, but I'm not exactly sure because it was one of my husbands tools and I was thinking he probably wouldn't like that I was using it to cut the chain, so I never told him. Heehee. Also, I don't think he reads the comments on our blog, so he'll never know. :)

Thanks Amy. I’m sorry, I wish I could remember. I tried to remember before I did it, because I was explaining it to my husband pre-installation and he was not liking the idea. He likes it now though. I knew if I had the picture he’d like it. I’ll tell you what I did, and perhaps that will help?

First, I have a double hung window, so I decided to get plantation shutters that would cover up the middle bar. So, all in all, they probably cover 60% of the height of the window. I bought the shutters from coastal shutters - so DON’T go there, it took forever and they never answered my phone calls or email. I got the biggest slats I could…I think 3″ each, which is why there are only 4 on each side. After my dad hung the shutters (and I’m so happy he did, because it required a lot of patience, something I don’t have and my husband doesn’t like detail work). I went to home depot and looked at their premium wood selection. I got a 3 foot wide and 6 inches deep piece of wood. I wanted the premium wood ‘cause my assumption was that it was stronger, ‘cause I wanted to make sure it wouldn’t bow in the middle. While I was at home depot I also went to the chain department and bought a thin chain, but made sure to see that it could carry a heavier load. I didn’t want them pulling apart and then having a sink full of ceramic bits, plants, and dirt! I think I bought 10 feet or something. I also bought the hooks you see on the ceiling, I got white ones, and each one holds 40 pounds or something insane like that. I made sure to get hooks that could be turned 360, ‘cause I wasn’t sure if it would create problems with the chain if the hooks were stationary.
Then, I got everything home and spent the next day painting the shelf white with a sponge brush in semi-gloss. I did two coats on either side. Then I was getting ready to hang it, and realized the chain was too strong for me to bend. So, that’s when I decided I’d need some S-hooks.
That kitchen paint looks amazing. I can't believe how it makes the cupboards seem so much more unique. I'm really impressed. I posed my kitchen windown condundrum at Home Improvements Net Blog where the moderator is currently talking about kitchen curtains. But so far the best solution I've seen is yours because it's not just some plantation look -- its very unique... and I'm an herb gardening nut (even here in the desert with snow - Reno)
Do you remember what magazine? Any idea where I can go for plans on that?

Hi Christian, I see what you're saying. I tried to pretend I was seeing the garage door for the first time when I read your note. I'm somewhat skewed about the door 'cause the previous owners painted everything on our house with one coat of paint, so when you look at the door, not in a photo, it's also a crappy paint job. We will be painting the door, since that's all we can afford. :) However, I like the door in the photo better because it's more suited to our "prairie style" ranch. Ours is more 40's than it's mid-century modern. I think the garage door might be more appropriate to a mid-century modern ranch. Also, the most difficult thing has been trying to figure out what colors to paint the house when two colors have already been decided 1) the red roof and brick and 2) The mahogany on the west side of the front of the house. I talked with a graphic designer and some other folks, and with the natural wood and red brick they thought the lighter greens made our house look country, which I had to agree when I thought of it that way. So, we're trying a dark grey/brown with undertones of green and then a trim that is kinda greyish/green. It's hard to describe. Luckily it's not that big of a patch to paint since it's only the east side of the house! If we don't like it, we can change it...though I'd rather not. I'm rambling now.

That would be cool...oh well maybe you can find a slightly cheaper one. Our garage door needs replacing too (one more thing in a LONG list!). Good tip on "lottalivin". I'm in progress of setting up a webring for midcentury remodeling..want to join when I have it set up?
I'm going to post some of the photos from the landscape book today.

.95 a foot??? That's so cheap. I hope ours is that cheap, if it is I'm buying it now! Otherwise I think we'll have to wait a year or so.
Painting the underside silver is a possibility. I'd been thinking of a light blue...maybe there is a metallic-y light blue out there. I had also been pondering black. Well, it' s year out, so I still have time to think.

We're matching all the original molding in our addition. It's a standard size, but an odd cut. The price for custom cut was $0.95 per foot, minimum 500 ft. If they don't have the right knife, they can make one for about $125.

I haven't seen simple legs for a claw-foot tub. You might paint the under side of the tub silver. Make it a little space-agey.

Thanks Kim! The color is City Lights by Pittsburg paints. I absolutely love it. My mom described it as "sky blue" and I think it's a dead-ringer for the blue I've seen in Pottery Barn lately. We used it in the living room, kitchen, and now the hallway. It's very serene. I like it because it reminds me of what the sky looks like in the summer (the winters in Oregon can be awfully long and dreary!).

Love, love, LOVE the blue! So fresh and clean! I'm trying to figure out where in my house to use blue. It's in the painting that I'm basing my color choices around and I know I want to use it somewhere:)

I second Shauna's comments, I'm SO JEALOUS of your yard! Except for mowing and occasionally weeding, our landscaping is going to be ignored until we get finished with these big projects. We don't have the time or the money to dedicate to it now *sniff sniff*. I think your yard looks great!

Hi Shauna! Someone painted the cement at some point...it's kind of a brown washed look. This means I'll be repainting it myself, but I'll use something specifically made for cement, as I don't think what is on it right now is made for cement. And I think I'll match it to the darker color that we are painting the garage.
Oh, and about the grass. Yes, Oregon is great because we do have green grass through the winter (although in the middle of summer I'm sure some tourists wonder why so many Oregonian's don't water their lawn, but I've never seen a lawn die around here...they come back every fall). Anyway, some people may have green grass around here, but what we actually have, if you look closely, is green moss with a few sprouts of grass. That's right, almost our entire front lawn is actually moss. You can't tell, until you look close. :)

Hey, I just found your site when I did a google search for "modwalls tile" the type of tile you used. I was looking at your flickr photos and noticed that some of them had
